It's Sunday afternoon and I just got the call that the service I was supposed to preach at tonight was cancelled. "Serendipitous", my wife said. It's been a long week, I'm tired, and my throat hurts.
I'm sitting in my big chair, by the fire, listening to the rain or sleet or whatever precipitation is coming down hit the roof of the house now, and I'm grateful for some down time.
Sunday afternoons in our house are tough. I often try to compare them to the "normal persons" weekend, but I really don't know what the normal person's weekend is like. We've never really had a normal weekend. Since we've had kids, we've been in church ministry and so our Sundays have always been busy. They are less busy now than they were when we were at churches that had multiple Sunday services, but they are still busy.
The real challenge is making sure that the kids get a chance to relax and don't feel like the house is in disarray. They go to school five days a week, Saturdays we try to keep pretty basic, but then Sunday rolls around and we're right back at it. Before you know it it's Sunday night, which is a school night...
In any case, it's nice to have a day where the obligations are finished and we can all just lock ourselves in the house and relax.
Also, tonight is The Walking Dead, so there's that.
